Rubber Duck Races

The Great Rubber Ducky Race to save SOU Pool

On sale now are Duck Adoption tickets for the 2nd Annual Great Rubber Duck Race. Ticket sales go toward keeping the SOU Pool open to the community.

Hosted by the Aquatics Foundation of Southern Oregon (AFSO), The Great Rubber Ducky Race will feature 3,000 rubber ducks. Each duck will wear a number, sold as a raffle ticket. The Rubber Ducks will be released to race down the rapids of Ashland Creek on July 11, 2009 at 10 a.m. The event will be staged from the bridge behind the Lithia Park Bandshell, with the finish line at the children’s pool near the Lithia Park playground. Raffle ticket holders – known as ducky adoption tickets – are welcome to come to Lithia Park on the morning of July 11th to cheer on their rubber ducky, but they need not be present to win.

AFSO is a non-profit 501(c) 3 aquatics advocacy coalition. After SOU’s pool closed in the Spring of 2007, AFSO partnered with SOU and negotiated an agreement to reopen the pool to community users from all over the Rogue Valley (including Rogue Valley Masters, Southern Oregon Water Polo, Rogue Valley Water Polo, Superior Stingray Swimmers, Ashland, Phoenix and Medford Swim Teams, and other swim & boating safety, scuba classes and certifications). This fundraiser pays pool operating costs. AFSO’s mission is to support aquatics in Southern Oregon.

Prizes will be offered to the first thirty-five Rubber Ducky winners over the finish line. The Grand Prize is $1,000 in cash, thanks to a generous donation from American Leak Detection. Other prizes include raft trips, a digital camera, a pair of salmon fishing rods & reels, theater tickets, a 2-night stay in Napa Valley, a handmade hardwood frame. Duck adoption tickets can be purchased at Paddington Station in Ashland, Pro Wireless in Ashland, Norris Shoes in Medford, Segway of Jacksonville, Bottom Time Scuba in Talent, R&R Pet Resort in Phoenix and AFSO’s 4th of July booth in Lithia Park.
